About Gevurat Ari

Gevurat Ari is a Talmud commentary by 18th-century Lithuanian scholar Rabbi Aryeh Leib Gunzburg, also known as the Sha’agat Aryeh. It is lengthy, analytical, and focuses on understanding the core talmudic texts rather than extensively engaging with other talmudic commentaries. Gunzburg had expressed interest in publishing the collection but did not do so before his death, and the commentaries remained in manuscript form until 1862, when the first volume, on tractate Ta’anit, was published. The volumes on Yoma and Makkot were published in 1906, more than a century after Gunzburg’s death, by Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan.
